JINNICKY SAVES CHRISTMAS
By Nathan M. DeHoff

“Great buttered breadcrumbs!” exclaimed a goose, quickly flying out of the way of an approaching red vehicle. “Why in the Lakes of Lopandra would you be out here on Christmas Eve?”
“Oh, no reason. Just wanted to have some fun, har har har!” laughed the occupant of the conveyance, who was a man in a red jar with the lid perched on his head like a hat. “Besides, all the holiday traffic is on the ground.”
“But you’ll catch your death of cold up here!”
“That’s what Alibabble said. I’m not worried, though. My Jinrikisha has central heating, after all.”
“Well, just watch out for—What in the sky is that?”
That turned out to be another vehicle that was quickly approaching, and the man in the jar swerved just in time to avoid being hit by it. Two winged horses drew the vehicle, which was sort of a chariot, carved in gold and decorated with leaves. Riding in it were three long-haired men, dressed in green and with quivers of arrows on their backs.
“I wonder where they’re going in such a hurry,” stated the jugged man. “Out to get some last-minute presents?”
“I don’t know, but with all the sky there is, you’d think everyone wouldn’t be right in my path tonight. Anyway, my name is Greta. Might I presume I have the pleasure of addressing the Red Jinn of Ev?”
“Quite correct, quite correct, har har har! You can call me Jinnicky, Miss Greta.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Jinnicky, even if we did meet in a rather inauspicious manner.”
“My apologies, Miss Greta. So, do you have any plans for Christmas?”
“I’m going to visit my parents back on Lake Nylla.”
“Oh, a family visit, eh? I’m on my way to the Emerald City for Ozma’s annual Christmas bash. You should come. Her cooks always make too much food.”
“Maybe I’ll stop by if the folks get tiresome. She’s not serving goose, is she?”
“Har har, no, Father Goose is coming this year, and his companion was most insistent that we don’t serve any. Pajuka will be glad of that, too, come to think of it.” While the vast majority of poultry eaten in Oz has been grown on trees for some time, ever since the legendary Wizard Wam successfully cultivated what he called poul-trees, many birds are still not too keen on meat that resembles their species being served at events they attend.
“Wait a minute. Isn’t that the chariot that just passed us?” asked Greta, noticing the same vehicle with the winged horses a bit lower down in the air. “It looks like it’s headed for that sled.”
“Sled? Why, that’s Santa’s own sleigh! I wonder what they’re doing. Trying to get their presents early?”
“If so, they’re very serious about it. I think they have weapons.”
The passengers on the chariot did indeed have weapons, specifically bows. Nocking arrows, two of them pointed them toward the reindeer, and the other toward the holiday icon himself.
“All right, Claus, this is a hijacking!” shouted the passenger nearest the sleigh.
“You mean you’re hijacking Santa Claus’s sleigh on Christmas Eve?” asked a crooked man who sat next to Santa. “What, you can’t wait for your presents?”
“Enough wisecracking! We represent the High Legion of Elves, and we intend to put a stop to your exploitation of our noble race!”
“Exploitation?” said Santa. “Why, we pay the elves quite well.”
“It isn’t about the money! It’s about how elves are no longer respected in modern society.”
“Yes,” added one of the other elves. “Time was when elves were feared. Now, people just think of us as happy workers, making toys for the children. It’s ruined our reputation!”
“What Elharlen said. I’m sure you understand where we’re coming from, crooked elf.”
“Elf? I, sir, am a Knook. Peter Knook, to be specific. We are the caretakers of forests, animals, and wild places. Elf, indeed!”
“Well, we don’t care! We’re hijacking the sleigh, and kidnapping Santa Claus!”
“You do realize that the Awgwas and the Daemons already did that, right?”
“Our goal isn’t to be original,” said the third elf, who had a voice rather like a ringing bell. “It’s to make a statement.”
“But if you kidnap Santa, we won’t have any Christmas!” objected Jim, a young chimneysweep who accompanied Santa.
“Not true,” said the lead elf. “Christmas isn’t about Santa.”
“That’s true. It’s about the birth of Jesus.”
“It really isn’t about that either,” stated the third elf. “Christmas is merely the latest iteration of the celebration of the winter solstice, which is based on the tilt of the world on its axis. That will happen regardless of what happens to Santa.”
“This is true,” admitted Santa, “but the children are counting on my visiting. Would you really want to let down the children of the world?”
“Do you think we care about children?” asked the lead elf. “Children are annoying!”
“I like children,” put in Elharlen.
“Oh, who cares what you think? Leave the thinking to Lohara and me!”
Jinnicky, out of sight behind a cloud, had heard this exchange by means of a magical ear trumpet, and relayed the gist of it to Greta. The goose honked, “They can’t do that to Santa!” “Oh, no, indeed!” agreed the Jinn. “I just have to find some magic to teach those elves not to mess with holiday tradition.” Rummaging through the items he brought with him, he began muttering, “No, not the horse tonic. Or the yellow incense. Dissolving formula? That would be too extreme even for them. If only it were about fifteen minutes later,” said Jinnicky, looking at a watch he had taken from his sock.
“You keep a watch in your sock?”
“Of course! Haven’t you ever heard of keeping time with your feet? Hmmm, what’s this? Duplicating powder?”
“Maybe that would help. What does it do?”
“It creates illusory duplicates of a person or animal. Very useful sometimes, but I don’t see how it would help us now.”
“If you use it on me, maybe I can distract them. If I know anything about old-school elves, it’s that they can’t resist a shooting spree.”
A few pinches of the powder resulted in an entire flock of geese flying over Santa’s sleigh, with Greta honking loudly the whole time. Elharlen shouted out, “Hey, look! Geese!”
“We have no time for game right now,” said Lohara.
“Oh, no? I say there’s always time for game,” stated the leader. “Watch me shoot down this entire flock. They don’t call me Surell Sure-Shot for nothing.”
“I thought it had something to do with vaccinations,” said Elharlen.
“Sounds like a Nerf product to me,” added Jim.
“Oh, shut up!” yelled Surell, as he pointed his bow and arrow toward the geese. “It’s time to get some Christmas goose.”
The arrow that the elf fired hit its target, but as the target was merely an illusion, the arrow flew right through it. This happened with the next arrow as well, and Surell began cursing in Elvish. “How do my arrows go right through them?”
“Oh, I see,” said Elharlen. “You can’t hit them, so you make excuses about your arrows going through them. I won’t have that problem.” Elharlen did, however, have that problem, for obvious reasons.
As the elves were attempting to shoot down at least one of the geese flying overhead, Santa’s watch suddenly chimed twelve. A cheerful voice called down, “Merry Christmas, everyone!” and powder fell down onto the three elves.
“What is that? Powdered sugar?” asked Santa.
“Certainly doesn’t taste like it,” answered Elharlen, who had caught a flake on his tongue.
“No, it’s my instant present-wrapping powder!” called out Jinnicky, as he brought his Jinrikisha into view. Sure enough, all three elves were soon wrapped up in colorful packaging with bows on top. The Jinn nimbly grabbed the three of them and placed them on his conveyance.
“Sorry I took so long,” added the Jinn, “but the powder wouldn’t work until midnight.”
“Jinnicky!” called Santa. “You saved Christmas!”
“Be sure to give some of the credit to Greta,” said Jinnicky, as the goose flew toward the sleigh. “She bought us some time by distracting the elves.”
“Nice to meet you, Miss Greta. I’d like to stay and talk, but I’m afraid I’m running behind schedule now.”
“I’d help you out, but I don’t think I’d be much good at getting down chimneys, what with the jar,” laughed the Jinn.
“No, I can manage. I’ve worked on tighter schedules before. Will I see you at Ozma’s palace in the morning?”
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world! I hear King Ato is trying out a new macaroni and cheese recipe, so don’t fill up on milk and cookies!”
“I look forward to trying some. Merry Christmas, Jinnicky and Greta, and thank you for saving us!”
As Santa flew off, the goose asked the Jinn what he was planning on doing with the elves, to which he replied that he would let Ozma decide. Santa, Greta, and Jinnicky all did show up at Ozma’s palace on Christmas morning, and it was one of the jolliest occasions you can imagine. I certainly wish I could have been there.

REDDY AND WILLING: THE ADVENTURES OF JAIR
By Nathan M. DeHoff

Back in the day, when the Land of Oz was not quite as pleasant a place as it is now, there lived a tribe of tiny people in the Quadling Country. They were similar to brownies, but as they wore red and had reddish complexions, they were known as Reddies. These little people were wanderers, often falling prey to wandering monsters, natural disasters, or just being stepped on by the larger Quadlings. They tended not to bear grudges, however, but instead helped out the bigger folk whenever they could. Some lived in Quadling households and assisted the people with their housework. Others preferred to remain in the wild, and perform deeds of other sorts. One of this kind was a man named Jair, who was officially a chieftain, although leadership among the Reddies tended to be fairly loose. Jair was an adventurer, often riding on his tiny horse Ibzan to perform heroic deeds throughout the land.
One day, while Jair was riding through a patch of treacherous territory, overgrown with bramble bushes, the Reddy came across a group of women holding canes and brooms. One of them had a patch over one eye. Jair realized that this could provide an opportunity to perform a good deed, but could also be trouble. While riding under the hedges was not much of a problem for a Reddy, humans were unlikely to come to such an out-of-the-way place unless they were either lost or planning something. So, concealing himself and his steed behind a rock, the tiny man began listening to the women’s conversation.
“Are you sure this will work?” asked one of the women, in a raspy voice. “I mean, the King has guards, doesn’t he?”
“Yes, but he leaves his window open a crack at night,” stated another, whose voice was a bit lower in register. “He gets heat stroke otherwise. I learned this while working at the castle.”
“I still don’t see why I couldn’t have been the one to work at the castle. You know I always wanted to be a spy!” insisted a third.
“You’re too bad-tempered,” answered the woman with the eyepatch. “You would have turned someone into a frog on your first day there, and been exposed as a witch. Anyway, are we all clear on the plan?”
“I’m not,” put in the fifth woman, whose voice was rather dense.
“Why do we have to repeat everything for your benefit, Bleakie? All right. One more time. We’ll all shrink ourselves and fly through the King’s window, regain our normal sizes, and turn him into a cricket.”
“Aren’t crickets noisy?” asked the third witch. “Wouldn’t a ladybug be better?”
“All right, we turn him into a ladybug, even though he’s not a lady.”
So these women were witches, planning to overthrow a king! Which king, though? Thanks to Bleakie’s slow wits, Jair knew the plan, but not where they were going to strike. Oz was full of kings. A thought did occur to the Reddy, however. If the one witch were still working at this king’s castle, he could follow her there. His horse would never be able to keep up with her, but maybe he could stow away on her broom. So, with a whispered command to his steed, the two tiny beings quickly jumped into the bristles of the witch’s broom. He did so just in time, as the witch promptly sat on the broom and flew off into the afternoon.
The flight was quite stressful for Jair, who was doing his best to hold on to the bristles with one hand and his horse’s bridle with the other. It was a much bumpier ride than you might expect on a broomstick, and Jair soon learned he was not particularly comfortable with heights. Fortunately, it was less than an hour before the witch arrived at her destination, a bright red castle on a hill. In fact, the Reddy recognized it from pictures he had seen as the home of Jandor, King of the Quadlings. So the witches were planning on taking over the entire quadrant! This was an even more significant plot than the tiny man had thought. He had to warn the king before the witches could spring their trap.
To that end, Jair rode into the castle, carefully avoiding the feet of the many people hurrying to and fro. None of them noticed him at all, which was partially because of his size, but also because they were all so busy with their own tasks. Servants rushed around the castle with baskets of laundry, trays of food, mops, and many other items. The Reddy took a quick look into every room he came to, except the ones where the doors were firmly closed. Finally, he made it to what he assumed must be the throne room, as a rosy-faced man with a red beard was sitting on a ruby chair at the other side. As quickly as he could, Jair drove Ibzan through the chamber and up the arm of the throne. A leap brought him to the king’s shoulder, and avoiding the monarch’s unconscious attempts to shrug off the intruder, he began to whisper into Jandor’s ear. “Your Majesty, a coven of witches is launching a plot against you!”
“Huh? What?” muttered the King, who was barely awake, having just spent the last two hours listening to a speech from his chief chamberlain. “Are you my conscience?”
“No! Look here, on your shoulder!”
“A tiny man? I must be hallucinatin’ from hunger. When is dinner?”
“No, Your Majesty! My name is Jair, and I’m a Reddy!”
“Ready for what?”
“No, we’re a tribe of tiny people. Are you sure you’ve never heard of us?”
“Eh, I seem to recall readin’ about you in one of my fairy books. I di’n’t think anyone actually believed in you, though.”
“How can you live in an enchanted fairyland and not believe in Reddies?”
“Never thought of it that way. Anyway, what’s this about witches?”
“Hush, Your Majesty! Wait a minute!”
“Huh? For what, Mr. Reddy?”
The reason Jair saw the need to shush the King was that the witch with whom he had hitched a ride to the castle had just entered, sweeping the dust from the floor into a bag. There was very little dust, however, and King Jandor asked, “Do you have to do that now, ma’am? One of the other maids just swept the room, and I’m sure my staff isn’t THAT messy.”
“Very well, Your Majesty,” returned Bikkie, with an awkward curtsey.
After the witch had left the room, Jair once again tried to explain the plot to the monarch. He was rather disturbed by the whole thing, but wondered what he could do about it. “It’s not like I can sleep with the window closed, eh? I get heat stroke somethin’ fierce!”
“Do you know of any good magicians you can call in to fight off the wicked witches?” questioned Jair.
“Ah, that’s a good idea, my good man…er. Reddy. Now, where did I put that directory of magicians? Joab! Joab!” shouted the King, while pulling on a bell-pull.
“Yes, Your Majesty?” said the tall man who responded to the summons.
“Joab, where is my directory of magicians?”
“It should be here on the shelf,” replied Joab, looking at a nearby bookshelf. “Oh, my stars and stockings! This book of common Quadling fish should be on the other side. When’s the last time anyone organized this shelf?”
“Just this mornin’, you did.”
“And it’s already out of order? My whales and whiskers!”
“You haven’t any whiskers.”
“Ah, yes, Your Majesty. ‘Tis always been my shame, that I have been unable to grow facial hair. Ah, here’s the directory.”
Paging through the book that Joab handed him, Jandor said, “Hmm, this girl lives in the area. Glinda, Good Witch, First Order of Lurline. Very pretty, what?”
“With all due respect, Your Majesty, judging a magician on looks is a rather bad plan. Nonetheless, this Glinda sounds like a promising young lady. What do you need a witch for, anyway?”
The King, with help from Jair, explained the plot as quickly as they could, and Joab immediately dispatched a messenger to Glinda’s home. A mere hour later, while the King was eating a piece of bread and butter, the Good Witch arrived in the throne room. She was a tall and very attractive red-haired woman, looking rather young, although it can be difficult to tell ages with magic-workers. She bowed to Jandor, and asked, “How can I be of service to you, Your Majesty?”
Jandor and Jair explained the plot of the wicked witches, and Glinda readily agreed to help the ruler. Therefore, on the night when the witches were about to spring their trap, they found Glinda in the King’s bed rather than the monarch himself, who was staying in Joab’s room. Before the witches could return to their human forms, the Good Witch promptly caught the five flies in a jar, hastily but gracefully screwing the lid on so they could not escape.
“Let us out, lady!” buzzed the leader of the witches, who still had an eyepatch over one of her compound eyes.
With a few waves of her hands, Glinda restored the witches, but with ropes tied around them. As they soon learned, the ropes neutralized any magic that the women tried to use. The Good Witch called the King into the room, and he promptly had the five witches banished. Four of them settled in Jinxland, which was technically part of the Quadling Country but was generally left alone by the monarchy. The one remaining witch, Bleakie, became lost along the way, and was not heard from for some years after that. King Jandor was very grateful to both Glinda and Jair. Some say he proposed right then and there to the Good Witch, but she turned down his offer. As for Jair, in exchange for his valuable service in exposing the treasonous plot, the King ordered his finest artisans to build a miniature city for the Reddies. The city, known as Baffleburg after the chief artisan Byron Baffle, was placed in the territory of the barons in the Red Mountains, and Jair himself was appointed Baron of Baffleburg. While he had his own castle, he still enjoyed performing good deeds for the people in the area. Several years after Baffleburg had been established, Jair walked out of his fortress and noticed a man tramping through the mountains with the aid of a cane. He was a bit stooped, and had a rather sloppily trimmed red beard.
“Well, bless my boots!” exclaimed the man in a raspy but still jolly voice, despite the fact that he was actually wearing sandals. “If it isn’t a Reddy!”
“There’s an entire town of us right around the bend,” returned Jair.
“Ah, yes, I believe I have heard of your town. Battleburg, or something like that.”
“Baffleburg, good sir.”
“Well, my name is Jakgar, and I am a magician. I am in these mountains to seek out a valuable treasure that is said to be buried in a nearby cave.”
“If you need help, I’ll gladly come along with you.”
“Oh, certainly! I am not one to scoff at assistance, no matter how small.”
So with that, Jair leapt onto Jakgar’s shoulder, and the magician proceeded toward the north. A bit of searching with his cane led Jakgar to the cave he was seeking, and he then walked down a long passage, complaining under his breath about his decision to wear the wrong sort of shoes. The passage was dark, but Jakgar used a fast spell to produce a bright light with his cane.
“According to my seventh sense, what I’m looking for is behind that wall,” stated the magician. “I don’t know how I could possibly get through there, though.”
“I think I could, Mr. Jakgar,” said Jair. “I see a crack in the wall that I could fit through.”
So the Reddy ran through the crack, and found himself in a room lit with an eerie red light. It turned out to be coming from a large ruby on top of a pedestal, which Jair promptly climbed. As soon as he touched the jewel, however, a wall on the other side of the cavern slid aside, revealing a simply enormous woman with the body of a snake below her waist, and a huge nose with a horn like that of a rhinoceros.
“I am the guardian of the ruby,” announced the woman. “I suppose I didn’t really need to say that, did I? Isn’t it obvious?”
“I suppose it is.”
“Anyway, do you really think you could defeat me, let alone take a ruby that’s bigger than you are? Don’t make me laugh!”
“You don’t sound like you’re going to laugh anyway. Besides, I may be small, but all I really need is strength of heart!”
“Strength of heart? What IS that, even?”
Jair did not bother to answer, but instead leapt up to the monster’s hand, and stuck his tiny sword into one of her fingers. It made a small wound, but did bleed. Well, it looked at first like it was bleeding, but the red liquid that poured out of the wound did not have the same consistency as blood. As the liquid drained out, the monster began shrinking, and lost some of her more bizarre features. In fact, she was soon recognizable as the wicked witch Bleakie.
“Wait, aren’t you one of Blinkie’s witches?” inquired the Reddy.
“Well, I was. When the others were flying to Jinxland, I became lost in these mountains, and found myself in this cave. I tried to take this ruby, but it turned me into a monster, and a cave-in trapped me in here. I don’t know why stabbing my finger broke the curse, but it apparently did.”
Jair climbed back onto the pedestal, and tried his best to lift the ruby. Surprisingly, he was actually able to do so, despite its being larger than his entire body. A beam from the jewel caused the wall through which the Reddy had entered to disappear, revealing Jakgar waiting for him.
“What was going on in there? And who is this charming lady?”
Jair was not sure about Bleakie being charming, but did introduce her to the magician. Taking the ruby from the miniature man, the magic-worker led the way back to his own house, which was south of the mountains and had a high peaked roof. When Jair told them how he had retrieved the gem, Jakgar guessed that the curse did not affect him because of his strength of character and the fact that he did not want the ruby for himself, but he admitted that he could be wrong. After a few days of experimentation, with some help from Bleakie, he was able to determine several uses for the magical jewel.
“I feel I need to reward you for the service you’ve done,” said Jakgar to the Reddy.
“Oh, no reward is necessary. Performing good deeds is just something I do.”
“I think you’ll like this reward, though. Through the magic of the ruby, I shall cause you and your tribe, as well as the entire city of Baffleburg, to grow to normal human size.”
The magic took about an hour to perform, but Jakgar was as good as his word. When he had finished, he gave the now human-sized Jair a black flagon full of red liquid similar to what had leaked out of Bleakie’s monstrous body, telling the former Reddy that Baffleburg and its residents would only maintain their current size as long as the liquid remained in the flagon. He and Bleakie helped Jair in building a labyrinth in the castle in which to keep the flagon, as well as producing some other magical defenses.
Jair and Jakgar remained friends for the rest of the Baron of Baffleburg’s days, and the former Reddy was the best man at the magician’s marriage to Bleakie, who determined not to rejoin her fellows in Jinxland. Eventually, Jair died at a ripe old age, and left the barony to his son Mozar. Baffleburg continued on in its way until the time of Jair’s great-grandson Mogodore, who launched a fearsome campaign of conquest that eventually reached the capital of Oz. That, however, is another story.

The Undead World Of Oz

In keeping with the recent trends of adding monsters to classic literature like Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, Ryan C. Thomas decided to add some of the walking dead to the original Wizard Of Oz novel in The Undead World Of Oz. This is published by Coscom Entertainment, which specializes in other zombiefied literature like Alice In Zombieland.

The book is essentially a retelling of Dorothy going to Oz, although once there, she finds out that the Wicked Witch of the West casted a spell that makes the dead Munchkins rise from their graves and eating the brains of the living. Dorothy gets a magic gun from a Munchkin with unlimited ammo that shoots out bullets which always hit their intended targets. Toto gets temporarily infected with the zombie virus too, but is conveniently cured by a transfusion by the only Munchkin who is apparently immune to zombie bites, but gets devoured by hungry zombies. The story goes with Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion joining her, although Dorothy accidently kills the Tin Man's zombified ex-girlfriend. They then get sent to the Wicked Witch, who ends up as a zombie buffet. However, her death doesn't stop the curse, so our heroes trek to Glinda for help. Her plan is to create a giant floating brain to lure all the zombies out. This leads into a large Army Of Darkness-type battle, where Dorothy emerges as "Buffy the Zombie Slayer". Also because of all her fighting the undead, her silver shoes turn ruby.

This rewritten adaptation is fair, although alot of it is just a direct copy of the original book. There's not much of a horror element to it, more just zombie gore and violence. Not even very fun in a Sean Of The Dead kind of way. Mainly check it out only if you're a total zombie junkie.

The Wheeler Of Oz

I recenlty got a hold of William Wall's original short film, The Wheeler Of Oz. This is a slightly original take on the characters of the Wheelers, who first appeared in the third Oz novel, Ozma Of Oz. Although they gained more popularity in the Disney movie, Return To Oz. This came into a little effect in the movie as Pons Maar, the head Wheeler from Return To Oz was consulted by Wall on how to create the look of the Wheeler. This movie was produced by Metro City Films, although it's referred to as Steam Powered Films.

Without giving away too much of the story, this is a prequal to the original Wizard Of Oz where a lone wheeler named Maliphet is outcasted by the other wheelers in the land of Ev for being kind-hearted. So, Maliphet decides to head to Oz across the Deadly Desert. He supposedly doesn't get killed from coming in touch with the desert(like one in Return To Oz did)possibly because the wheels on his hands and feet aren't organic. Anyway, once in Oz, he finds he is rejected by the citizens of the Emerald City too. The advent of a strange but inviting button labeled "Acceptance" takes the story in a somewhat tragic direction.

There's the appearance pf at least two recognizable Oz characters in this, plus a prominent one you'll recognize from their apparent lack of one eye. The movie is slighty on the same page as the Heartless movie with some heavy steampunk influence. There's even some regular steampunk costumers and performers as the Emerald City folk. The movie might be available for download later on, but you can currently get in on DVD from their store. It's a dark fairy tale, with a happy ending to it, that leads into a major part of Oz history.

The Bashful Baker Of Oz

I recently looked up this on Lulu which was written by Marcus Mebus from Pumpernickel Pickel Press, which prints original several Oz titles. This short book has some fine illustrations by Luciano Vecchio(although there's one picture with a way too thin Ozma), whose works include Oziana, as well as some other Oz titles for Buckethead Enterprises. The story for this is set in the regular Oz continuity, but centers around some original characters. In it, the shy cook Maria lives in the city of Crafton where she feels unappreciated, even though everyone seems to love her bakeries. However, she is being courted by the mysterious Emerald City citizen Luka, even though no one in Crafton believes her. Maria decides to go to the Emerald City and find Luka. After hitching a ride on a polite cow, she makes her way to Ozma's palace to ask for help in locating Luka. Jellia Jamb uses Ozma's magic mirror and sees that the one known as Luka is at a boutique which is busy getting ready for a large ball. Jellia and Maria go to the shop where Luka is at, but its revealed that he's really a clothes designer named Derek who pretended to be this important person in order to woo Maria. After Ozma councils Derek on his actions, he confesses his love for Maria, and she gains new confidence in herself. The two of them eventually get married, and live happily ever after in Crafton. This was a slightly refreshing change of pace involving some irregular but still original additions to the Oz cast, and makes for a decent read.

Heartless: The Story Of The Tin Man

Whitestone Motion Pictures has completed their independent movie of Heartless-The Story Of The Tin Man. This short film deals with the origins of the Tin Woodman, or as he's original known, Nick Chopper. In the movie he's simply called the woodsman. He is courting a maiden(who is revealed to be Nimmee Amee in The Tin Woodman Of Oz), and plans to marry her. The maiden's mother wants her daughter to marry a man of wealth, so she makes a deal with the Wicked Witch of the East to stop their affair. The Witch puts a curse on the axe to cut into its user. When the woodsman injures his arm, he has a master craftsmen(Ku-Klip)fit him with a new metallic arm. The woodsman eventually looses his other arm, his legs, and then his head. But when the axe finally cuts into his chest, his heart is destroyed, and the craftsman then gives him a psuedo-heart. Although from this point, the Tin Man begins to nothing but continue chopping down trees for the house he was originally planning on building for himself and the maiden. However, he completely forgets his reasons for doing so, and ultimately rejects the maiden who pours her heart out to him. The Tin Man then rusts after getting caught out in the rain, but is released years later by Dorothy and the Scarecrow. The movie is very well put together, and is delivered as a tragic fairy tale. A serious effort was made to make this seem like a steampunk-inspired production, with a fine set of actors and haunting soundtrack. The movie is currently available for download, with plans to put it in DVD too.

Visitors From Oz

I was about halfway through reading this fine book for the first time, when I was shocked to hear that the author Martin Gardner had recently passed away. He was a mathmetictian and author, but most noted for his work on Alice In Wonderland titled The Annotated Alice. He was also a big fan of L. Frank Baum, to which he did a retrospective in his book The Wizard Of Oz And Who He Was. Gardner later wrote this book for the 100th anniversary of the original Wizard Of Oz. Set in modern day(when it came out it was 1999), movie director Samuel Gold wants to do a film based on The Emerald City Of Oz, so of course he tries getting Dorothy to help make it. He manages to email Glinda(who apparently was set up with AOL)and arranges for her to come to America, although Glinda had Oz sealed away from the rest of the world at the end of The Emerald City Of Oz, so she arranges for Ku-Klip(Tin Man's old tinsmith)to create a Klein Bottle to bridge the gap between to Oz and Earth. A "Klein Bottle" is like an inter-dimensional Mobius strip. They find that they have to install the bottle in the town of Ballville in order to be able to make it to America, so Dorothy along with Scarecrow and Tin Man head out to Ballville with the bottle. Along the way, they discover a doorway leading to Wonderland(yes, that Wonderland)and decide to give it a look. Once there, they find out the inhabitants there aren't as mad as Lewis Carroll advertised. After they come back from there, they have a run in with a pushy giant, but manage to finally make it to New York which is where the Klein Bottle leads to. They befriend Samuel Gold, however soon learn that he is not the most loved movie producer in town. His rival, Buffalo Boggs, is planning his own sketchy production of Peter Pan, so he sends two goons to try and snuff out Dorothy and Co. After a few failed attempts, Dorothy uses the Water of Oblivion to erase the goons and Boggs' memories. So, Dorothy goes back to Oz, Gold makes his movie, and Martin Gardner breaks the fourth wall by being called in to write a book about the whole thing. I'd say that this was a pretty good Oz story, at least taking into account the history of the original books, although its seems a little convenient that a portal to Wonderland is located in Oz. But its a nice use of the characters, and puting them in present day America. I'd very much recommend this for hardcore Ozians.

Lost In Oz: Rise Of The Dark Wizard

The second in the Lost In Oz trilogy by Joshua Dudley takes place a few months after the original book left off. Joshua and his other Oz tourist group are now in the Mifkets Asylum, along with Alice from Wonderland(shades of American McGee's Alice?). Tamara, Tommy, and Laura manage to get back to Oz along with Dorothy via her magic slippers. Once there, they learn that about a century has passed, and Oz has been dominated by a new evil overlord called the Dark Wizard. They ally themselves with a group of fairies lead by the mischevious Pina, who are really working for the Dark Wizard, which Dorothy discovers, but the pixies use some amnesia magic on her to make her forget. Meanwhile, to double his chances of total victory the Dark Wizard has resurrected Bastinda(the Wicked Witch of the West), and plans to find the Great Book of Records to rewrite all the great disasters of Oz into one killstroke. But he also needs to acquire the Candle of Truth in order to do this. Back on Earth, Joshua befriends Wogglebug who was sent to him by Ozma and the remaining Ozians from the original timeline. He warps back to Oz with Toto, and is introduced to Oz's heroes, including Glinda, Tattypoo, Tik-Tok, a resewn Scraps, and the new Good Witch of the West. Tamara and the others are surrounded by the Nome King and his troops, where Tamara learns that she can use dark sorcery to ward off the nome army. Bastinda summons the Jabberwocky from Wonderland to collect Dorothy and Tommy, leaving Laura behind and seemingly dead. Tamara follows them, only to learn that the Dark Wizard is really her father from Earth, who convinces her to use her newfound powers for the side of evil. Ozma informs Joshua that the Dark Wizard plans to kill both him and Tamara so he can gain both of their powers. Joshua leaves to confront Tamara about this, who transports them to the Dark Wizard. Bastinda in the meantime gets the magic slippers from Dorothy, which end up to turning her into ashes. Tamara them reveals that she was only faking being evil to learn the Dark Wizard's plan, and they manage to use the Candle of Truth to send them back to Earth just before they first arrived in Oz. Alive and well, things seem okay, but a whole bunch of tornados show up like they did at the beginning of the first book. This book had a little more of an original adventure than the first one, and not just an alternate walkthrough of The Wizard Of Oz. Although there's a few things that were left out, like how realms like Wonderland are connected, plus the regular characters(both original and from Oz)don't seem to have room to develop very much. It's like we're introduced to Gloma(the new Witch of the West)but given no backstory on her, plus one of the original four characters from the first book just gets killed off because she didn't have much anything else to do in the story. Anyway, if the first volume peaked your interest, then you'll probably dig this one too. This leads into the upcoming third and final book, Temple Of The Deadly Desert. Plans are also in the works to do a Lost In Oz comic series too.

The Oz-Wonderland War

This was the very first comic book crossover with Wizard Of Oz and Alice In Wonderland. This was done by DC Comics in the mid-80s featuring Captain Carrot and his amazing Zoo Crew. It was originally going to be a 6-issue series, but was instead made into three double-length issues. The Captain and Co. are "funny animal" superheroes from universe parallel to the regular DC Universe where Superman hangs. In their world, Captain Carrot in his secret identity is the creator of a comic that is basically a furry version of the Justice League, which is later revealed to exist in another reality. He and the other Zoo Crewers are recruited by Cheshire Cat to come to Wonderland which is being threatened by Roquat, the Nome King. He has taken over Oz with his Magic Belt, and turned all of its heroes into ornaments that he's hidden throughout Oz. Once in Wonderland, they team up with some of their mad posse, including their Lion and Unicorn, plus Wogglebug and Hungry Tiger to rescue Cowardly Lion. The Zoo Crew's resident magic user, Abra-Kat-Abra, sends them to Gillikei to find that its under attack from two of the monsters from The Magical Monarch Of Mo, the Purple Dragon and Gigiboo. After taking care of those maruaders, they search for Lion as an ornament in a field of catnip, which makes all the feline heroes go a little nutty. But Lion is saved, and gang heads back to Wonderland. After recieving news from Jellia Jamb who is enslaved by Roquat, General Jinjur lets them know that Scarecrow hidden in the Poppy Fields. Along with Dorothy, they go to search for him, but have to take down some Kalidahs first. Thanks to some help from the Mouse Queen(who falls for the Zoo Crew's hero, Little Cheese)they restore Scarecrow. Tin Man is reported to be in the Wicked Witch's old castle, so the Crew and some Ozians head there to find its overrun with flying monkeys. They find Nick Chopper and turn him back to normal, but the Nome King transports his iron giant from Ev to finish them off. Fortunately, Tik-Tok and the White Knight help bring the colossus down. Next, Captain Carrot tries to sneak into the Emerald City as a regular rabbit-person-thingie, so he has Abra-Kat-Abra siphon off the power of his "cosmic carrots" to turn him back to his secret identity. Once there, he finds out Roquat had summoned rabbits from other neighboring dimensions in order to weed out Carrot, including White Rabbit, March Hare, and the Easter Bunny. Two other super-bunnies are Hoppy the Marvel Bunny(of the Shazam Family)and Wonder Wabbit who is from the Just'a Lotta Animals that is the basis for the comic Carrot does. They all team up to fight the Nome King's super-powered Frenetic Five team of nomes, but in the end Roquat accidently wishes that everything just before Carrot snuck into Emerald City. Thanks to the Red Queen's magic, the team then goes to the Quadling Country to rescue the North and South Witches, only to have to contend with the mighty Jabberwock. Glinda sends it back to Looking-Glass Land, and the Crew returns to Wonderland. Planning for a final assault, Little Cheese sneaks into Emerald City and gets the Golden Cap of the flying monkies from the Nome King. Tin Man uses it to round up the monkies and have them take all the other nomes out of the city while Roquat is busy being a couch potato with the Magic Mirror watching Captain Carrot looking for the ornament-ized Wizard of Oz in the middle of the Deadly Desert. Once the Wizard is back on their side, the entire Oz gang along with the Zoo Crew go to confront Roquat direclty, and use their secret weapon of Humpty Dumpty from Wonderland to scare him out of the Magic Belt(because nomes are allergic to eggs!). Ozma is restored, and the Nome King is sent packing. Glinda then sends the Zoo Crew back to their dimension, where Carrot still needs to finish his comic book deadline. I personally think that this was a pretty good series altogether, and you don't need to have been really familiar with the Zoo Crew too much to enjoy it. Although it seemed to focus more on the Oz characters than the Wonderland ones, even to the point that Alice herself is not even in it, much less even mentioned. It was more like it was a Oz-based story which borrowed a little from the Wonderland universe. Despite a recent comeback by the funny animal heroes in the pages of DC Comics, the original series has as yet to be put into a collected edition or trade paperback of some kind. The series is over 25 years old, but still not too hard to find all 3 issues of from various comics dealers. I'd say its major selling point was the artwork by Carol Lay was very close to the way that the illustrations in the Oz and Wonderland books appeared. As I'm a huge fan of furry heroes like TMNT and Hong Kong Phooey, I really dug this somewhat original superhero group, and its clashing with fairy tale characters. I doubt we'll ever see a Teen Titans/Peter Pan crossover though

The Land Of Oz comic

Acting as a continuation to the Dark Oz series, The Land Of Oz happens in a brand new timeline, although still set in the same universe as the previous Oz comics from Caliber Comics and Arrow Comics. Thanks to Ozma's dipping into the reality-altering Book of Undo, she has reset things in Oz prior to the Nome King's original takeover from ten years previously. So, a few things that are different is that Dorothy never aged physically into an adult, and most of the regular Oz heroes never took on more humanoid forms like Lion. The series takes place directly after the prelude chapter from Arrow Anthology issue #4, where the pilot Travis, his fiance Cat, and her younger brother Sean had crashed their plane within the land of Ev, and were surrounded by Wheelers. They are saved by the straggled royal army lead by King Evardo and his cousin Langwidere(the one with the head fixation), along with their wizard commrade known as "Friend". They let their new American friends know about how Ev has been taken over by the evil Dolnar who was using the Magic Belt, along with the witch Singra(which was the name given to the Wicked Witch of the South in some books), and the disgruntled Wheelers. So the King and his men were on their way to Oz to seek help from Ozma. She in turn has been in a coma since she restarted the everything, and she also seems to be the only one who knows that everything's changed. Evardo and his party arrive in the Emerald City and let them know that Dolnar's forces are heading to conquer Oz. While everyone else holds a council meeting, Sean talks to the Gump who is now just a talking head on the wall. He tells Sean about a hidden passage that leads the boy down into a secret workshop filled with spellbooks. Dolnar attacks the Emerald City with Singra and the Wheelers. Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, along with the combined Ev and Oz forces take them on, and friend manages to get the Magic Belt away from Dolnar. Ultimately, it is Sean who appears using a magic cane(which might be the Nome King's)who channels an unknown voice to use sorcery, and stops them. Singra whips the Magic Cap out of nowhere and summons the flying monkeys to escape along with Dolnar. Afterwards, Scarecrow calls in Wogglebug for advice on how to resuscitate Ozma, who suggests seeking out Glinda. In order to make the journey, Sean uses a batch of the Powder of Life he found in the lab and uses it to bring a tin horse to life for Tin Man. Along with the Sawhorse, the Three Kings and their new Earthling friends travel to Glinda's castle, only to find that it has disappeared. There is some blinding white null space surrounding the area where it should be, so our heroes go into it to investgate. They end up getting captured by the warrior Princess Evoria and her troops, and are brought before their Mage Lord. He accuses the Three Kings of leading a wake of devastation, although its really their evil counterparts that were originally under the Nome King's control. After it becomes clear that the visiting Ozians are not the evil ones, they are set free. Meanwhile, a now younger Dorothy is wandering with Toto alone in the kingdom of Oakdale, where they are reunited with the Wizard of Oz. He takes them to the King and Queen of Oakdale whom he had previously befriended(apparently sometime in the past of this new continuity). He has a balloon constructed to send the Wizard and Dorothy back to Oz, but they are suddenly confronted by a mob of elves. They come to warn them about the oncoming evil army, but they brought with them the good Three Kings who are reunited with Dorothy. The evil Three Kings arrive, but they also have dark versions of Jack Pumpkinhead, Sawhorse, and Hungry Tiger with them. Meanwhile, Ozma is back in Oz under the watch of Wogglebug, and fighting her own personal dark side within her mind. Once she comes to terms with her own other half, the evil versions of the other Ozians disappear, while the rest of the nomes head for the hills. The Oz heroes return home with Princess Evoria(who is also called Karina)to find that Ozma has come out her coma. This is where that storyline ended, but it was also the last issue of the entire Oz/Dark Oz/The Land Of Oz saga. Like Dark Oz, its currently unknown if this will be reprinted by Transfuzion Publishing, although it was hinted that Stuart Kerr and Ralph Griffith were planning on continuing the series past this point once they got this part to trade paperback. Bryan Bryan is still the artist, but the writing was taken over by Gary Bishop. I'd recommend tracking down this comic mostly for the lighter tone that it took with the characters to the more traditional whimsical Oz-type story.
